25 Similar Movies Released Around the Same Year

01. Olympus Has Fallen | White House Down – 2013
01. Olympus Has Fallen | White House Down – 2013
Have you ever noticed two seemingly identical movies being released at the same time and wondered why Hollywood studios would do such a thing? While you may have first chalked it up to mere coincidence, a quick scroll through the list below suggests otherwise.
Earlier this week, Redditor CircadianHour compiled a list of ‘twin movies‘. As to why? Another commenter (tossedsaladandscram) suggests that competing studios often own similar movie scripts and if one studio gets wind that another is making a movie that is similar to a script they own they may try to make it and put it out earlier or around the same time.
A secondary reason, suggested by Ducksaucenem, implies the benefits of shared marketing and buzz, especially if Studio B has a smaller budget. Interestingly, this could be why studios prefer to buy exclusive rights to comics and graphic novels, so other studios can’t replicate the storyline.
Coincidence or not, below is a list of strangely similar movies released around the same time. Any suggestions for additional ‘twin movies’ please let me know in the comments!

Shootout At Wadala - Hindi Movie Review

Film: Shootout at Wadala Cast: John Abraham, Tusshar Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Sonu Sood, Kangana Ranaut Director: Sanjay Gupta Rating: ***
Sanjay Gupta is perhaps the biggest self-proclaimed Quentin Tarantino fan in the country. When you look at Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006), there's no denying what inspired him to  conjure up those slow motion action sequence, and bullets blowing up brains.

Shootout at Wadala is no different. Set in the late 70's and 80's the film is an unapologetic gangster flick that milks every opportunity to  play to the gallery and titillate its core audience with violence and sex.

‘Bombay Talkies’ - Hindi Movie review

“Akkad bakkad bambe bo Assi nabey purey sau/Sau sau baras ka hua Yeh khiladi na budha hua…”
The ‘Khiladi’ referred to here, is none but Indian Cinema, which was born in 1913. People from the fraternity have had their own ways to pay their odes to the 100 year old institution and have expressed pride to have been associated with the same, some way or the other.

And ‘Bombay Talkies’ is such a tribute – collectively put together on celluloid by Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap. Like many of us would have expected, ‘BT’ comes across as a unique genre of cinema, something that has perhaps never been seen before.

Shahid's fire accident

Shahid's fire accident
Shahid Kapoor, who is shooting at Kamalistan studio for Rambo Rajkumar had a small fire accident on the sets recently. Apparently, while shooting for a scene where Shahid enters a house on fire, some hot solution fell on his back. A source said, "The fire is created artificially by a chemical solution. However the solution was excess and hence dripping. The solution was hot and it immediately bore holes in Shahid's t-shirt... The solution fell on his back and forearms. Shahid half sprinted while removing his t-shirt."
The unit immediately got ice and the safety kit which is kept handy at all times. The young actor has however been suggested to visit a dermatologist to ensure the burn marks heal quickly.

Michael Bay's 'Turtles' Reboot Gets New Title

The upcoming Paramount/Platinum Dunes reboot of the 80s comic/cartoon/toy line 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' has not been the most popular of in-development projects. While it is being directed by Jonathan Liebesman, it is producer Michael Bay who has been attracting so much negative attention. When it was announced that the characters were being fundamentally changed to alien beings and that the title of the new movie would be 'Ninja Turtles,' fans reacted, shall we say, unfavorably. Bay offered no quarter, and actually scoffed at upset fans on his website. The casting of Megan Fox, with whom Bay had worked on two of the 'Transformers' films, did little to quell the outrage. Now however, it seems there has been a shift. It has been reported that the title of the film has been changed back to 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.' The change was revealed during Paramount's presentation at Las Vegas CinemaCon. They unveiled the first logo for the film, which clearly bore the classic title.

Just last night, one Spillio asked me via Facebook why any of us should care about the 'TMNT' reboot given that those involved clearly don't care about the fans. I don't think we can say any longer that this production is completely apathetic to the fanbase. Sure, we may not be Bay and Liebesman's biggest concern, but they clearly can't ignore fan outcry either. The backlash was evidently strong enough to warrant a reconsideration of the film's official title. This news comes almost simultaneously with Bay's strange public apology for what he calls the inferior third act of 'Armageddon.' Has the man learned a lesson from all this? Has he gained some humility? That remains to be seen, as does whether the idiotic aliens conceit is still a go. Does this new title suggest that perhaps the recent rewrite by Evan Daugherty ('Snow White and the Huntsman') has eliminated the extraterrestrial elements? It's not definitive proof by any stretch of the imagination, but I remain optimistic that this apparent concession by the studio means fans are being heard more than they think.

What do you guys think? Happy the original title is back? Do you think the alien stuff will still be a part of the plot?
