China has become known as the epicenter for producing a wide variety of counterfeit and bootlegged consumer products, but a trend has emerged over the past few years of faking full retail operations. A relatively new phenomenon, these rogue counterfeit businesses are a problem for companies that are trying to establish a brand image in China’s emerging economy. While some of these operations sell actual products from the legitimate companies, many simply copy the retail format, right down to even the colors and slogans. Other forms of this type of counterfeiting have followed in the wake of major consumer trends, where illegally copying products, brands, or intellectual property of successful companies has turned into big business in China. 01. Apple Stores

Recently, the discovery of illegitimate Apple stores in several Chinese cities sparked controversy both in China and the U.S. The fake Apple store, which was uncovered by the Bird Abroad blog , had similar signage, layout and even salespeople as real Apple stores. However, BirdAbroad picked out several key details not common among true Apple stores and correctly pointed out the stores as fake. The stores claimed to have real Apple products, but were not licensed or operated by the company. Quickly following the public uproar—which included angry customers storming the stores in question demanding refunds—several of the stores were closed, not for their fraudulent use of the Apple brand, but for the lack of proper business licenses. 02. Disney Theme Park

Although fake stores are relatively widespread in China, more elaborate, but equally illegitimate theme parks have also been built. One of the most glaring examples is the Beijing Shijingshan Amusement Park, which is run by the Shijingshan district government. The park includes structures that closely resemble Walt Disney ’s iconic Magic Kingdom and Epcot center, while mascots strikingly similar to trademarked characters such as Shrek, Snow White, The Seven Dwarfs, Mickey Mouse, and Goofy can be seen around the park. Some of the characters were even spotted outside the Bird’s Nest Pavilion during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Although the park caught the attention of Disney in 2007, it remains in operation today and even maintains an English version of its website. 03. IKEA

The location pictured to the left is a legitimate IKEA store in China. Found in the same city as the fake Apple stores, Kunming in southwest China, is a 100,000-plus-square-foot, four-story retail center that operates under the name “11 Furniture.” However, it seems as though the only difference between 11 Furniture and the Sweden-based IKEA is the name. According to reports by Reuters, the store copies Ikea’s blue and yellow color scheme, mock-up rooms, miniature pencils, signage, and even rocking chair designs. Although the name of the store in English is not the same, in Chinese, 11 Furniture is "Shi Yi Jia Ju," which is quite similar to IKEA, which is "Yi Jia Jia Ju." (Ali Utku Selen)

04. Starbucks

If it works in the West, it’s a sign that China copy-cat stores may not be far behind. In 2006, Starbucks was successful in an intellectual property case against a Chinese company that operated under the name Xingbake, which is Chinese for Starbucks. There have been numerous reports of fake Starbucks in China, including One Dollar Coffee, Seayahi Cofee, Lucky Coffee, Bucksstar Coffee and more. Bucksstar Coffee in particular was part of a mall that featured several fake storefronts, including a store called “Pizza Huh” and “McDnoalds,” with similar color schemes and signage as the western originals, according to the U.K.’s Mirror . 

05. World of Warcraft Theme Park

If the Disney theme park wasn’t enough, an equally brazen Chinese entrepreneur decided to build a theme park based upon the popular World of Warcraft and Starcraft brands, owned by Blizzard Entertainment. The theme park is called World Joyland and is located in the Changzhou, west of Shanghai. The theme park was an attempt to merge the park and video game experience, and claims to have cost $30 million to build. However, the “Terrain of Magic” and “Universe of Starship” offerings are eerily similar to Blizzard’s brands, points out the blog Shanghaiist. (shanghaiist.com)

06. KFC

Although the real Kentucky Fried Chicken can be blamed in its own right for fakery in China—as evidenced by it’s use of an Obama imposter in several Chinese TV ads —the company is also a victim of storefront forgeries. The fake KFC stores not only use the fast-food chain's branding, but also replace Colonel Sanders with their own rendition . The fake KFCs may not remain around for long, however, since KFC recently became the largest restaurant company in mainland China, after becoming one of the fastest-growing brands in the country, according to a Harvard Business School study.

07. Harry Potter

Although China has notoriously been a haven for businesses copying American brands and merchandise, the same has happened for Harry Potter books in China’s domestic market, reports The New York Times . The Chinese market has been plagued by Harry Potter fakes that come in many forms. One type of forgery utilized the same title as an upcoming Potter book and peddlers began selling it several days prior to the official book’s release date. Other forgeries have used the text from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” swapping out the original character names with those from the Harry Potter universe and re-titling it "Harry Potter and the Leopard Walk-Up-To Dragon." Unlicensed translations and reproductions, of both Harry Potter and other popular books, are also rampant in China.

Another popular brand in China is Nike , and along with that popularity comes knock-off stores, such as this one, pictured left. Nike has been manufacturing in the region for decades and China also remains a major source of counterfeit Nike products. (David)

09. McDonald's

The restaurant pictured to the left is an official McDonald's location. McDonald's is another global brand with a strong and growing presence in China, but not even McDonald’s can escape imitation stores. Although the image to the left shows a real McDonalds restaurant, there have been several imitations that mimic a variety of McDonald's looks and logos. Most copy the look and feel of the restaurant, but others have copied the menus and even some of its slogans. Several imitations that can be found are "Mini Dog" and "Mcdnoalds," which both use the distinctive golden arches. (wikipedia.org)

10. Disney Store

Although the store pictured to the left has been confirmed by Disney to be legitimate, Reuters reports that even this non-fake business has components that are fake. His highest net worth is estimated to be $100 million. In 1994, he resigned, the reason for which is estimated to be the controversy revolving around his claims about the Michelangelo computer virus that could cause a problem to as many as 5 million machines. He sells away his company stocks and is taken over by Intel for $7.7 billion in 2010 and walks out of his own company as a multi-millionaire. He then shifts from Silicon Valley to Colorado and later to Belize.

7) From anti-virus software to herbal drug venture

After leaving the company and becoming a multimillionaire, McAfee invested his money into a herbal drug venture which was later found to be illegal. When his property, Orange Walk Town in Belize was raided by the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU), it was found out that he has been operating a drug manufacturing unit that was unlicensed. It was also disclosed through some sources that he was allegedly involved in a ‘retinue of prostitutes’ and manufacturing if a bizarre and extremely dangerous designer drug known as MPVD (Aka bath salts). One of the journalists who visited him quoted that he scared the hell out of her.

6) McAfee going ‘bonkers’

McAfee literally started going nuts after his herbal drug plan failed and was repeatedly reported to show unacceptable and crazy behaviour. He was also charged for owning an unlicensed weapon. In one of the raids done by the local authorities, he was found living with a 17-year old Belizean girl and discovered “seven pump-action shotguns, one single-action shotgun, two 9-mm. pistols, 270 shotgun cartridges, 30 9-mm. pistol rounds, and twenty.38 rounds.” After fourteen hours in custody, McAfee was released without charge. People were literally scared of him as he would walk on beaches holding a gun in his hand. The prime minister in one of his statements said that McAfee is extremely paranoid and even bonkers.

5) McAfee suspected to kill his neighbor

In November 2012 McAfee’s name was listen in the list of the ‘Wanted’ people as the police suspected him to be involved in the death of his neighbor Faull. On November 11, 2012 an American expatriate Gregor Viant Faull was found dead of a gunshot wound at his home in San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye. The police suspected McAfee to be involved in this murder because few days before Faull had filed a complaint against McAfee with the mayor’s office, proclaiming that he had fired off guns and exhibited ‘roguish behavior’. Moreover, other residents confirmed that McAfee and Paull have been holding grudges against each other for quite sometime now.

From the day McAfee was informed of being suspected for Faull’s murder, he had been playing the game of cat and the mouse and constantly trying to escape the Belizean authorities. In one of his interviews McAfee said that he has always been very scared of the police and that is why he refused to acknowledge their routine questions. He escaped to Guatemala when the police was still searching for him. While he was staying at one of the Guatemalan resorts, he fortuitously disclosed his location by letting Vice post his picture with geolocation metadata still attached to it. He then demanded political asylum when he publicly appeared in the Guatemala City and was later denied for the same. He was then arrested on December 5, 2012 for entering the Guatemala City illegally.

This news must have made to the headlines in the media and grabbed maximum number of eyeballs. TheMail Online in one of its articles revealed that just before McAfee fled to Belize to escape the law for being accused of murdering his neighbour Faull, he was living, or apparently ‘working’ (as McAfee said) with seven women in his house. Seems like McAfee took the concept of ‘Learning with fun’ to an altogether different level! One of his friends named ‘Paz’ is said to be responsible for getting all this women for McAfee whom McAfee claims to be ‘hired’ on the basis of the specifications and requirements stated by him, for a ‘social engineering project’. He updated his blog with the pictures of all these women and that in itself speaks a lot!

While McAfee was at the detention center in Gautemala, the media reported that he had suffered two mini heart attacks. However, later his lawyer clarified saying he had just been suffering from acute high blood pressure and anxiety attacks. McAfee then unveiled the real truth and said that he had faked those heart attacks in order to buy some time for his attorney to file a series of appeals that later prevented his deportation to Belize, and compelled the government to quickly send him back to the United States on December 12, 2012. After knowing this, we are bound to admit that McAfee is not only a good programmer but also a very good dramatist.

It is alleged that Tabu and her co-stars of the movie – Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan – went for a happy hunt near the protected village of Jodhpur. So, charges were filed against the celebrity hunting gang under wildlife preservation act. Though Salman Khan and others escaped verdict by not appearing before the Jury, Tabu was forced to. She was found guilty of the charges and booked under charges 9/51 and 9/52 of the Wildlife preservation act and 149 of IPC. He along with 3 others has been accused killing endangered wildlife species and has been charged under the wildlife protection act. But adding to that, Saif Ali Khan has also been found guilty for assaulting a NRi business man at the Taj in Mumbai.

4. Salman Khan

If there is a standard for a bad-boy-attitude in Bollywood, then Salman Khan sets a new level for it. He is the main perpetrator of the Jodhpur poaching case in 1998 along with his co-actors of Hum saath Saath Hain. Also he has been charges for illegal hunting in many other places. But what set the standards now are the first degree murder of 28-year old man and the assault of many others he is charged with. Hope the court maintains its impartiality in his case.

3. Sanjay Dutt

One of the most devastating assaults planned on India was the 1993 attacks in Bombay – planned and executed by Dawood Ibrahim. Preeti took Madhur Bhandharkar to court, and the case dragged on for 8 long years until the court was convinced that there was no strong evidence. But guilty or not, he is one of those few celebrities to have a rape case tagged on him.

Though it’s a well-known fact that major teams like to take their psychological intimidating to minnow teams, sometimes they go a little too far and get the appropriate response. The classic case of this was represented by Balaji Rao of Canada in the ICC World Cup 2011. Renowned for his classic beer-belly and his rather funny actions on the field, Balaji soon became the premier target for minnow intimidation. During the match versus Pakistan, probably the players went a bit too far to tease the Canadian. This led to an erupted Balaji Rao swearing at the whole Pakistani team, as if he had been specially recruited in to the Canadian playing 11 to swear at the opponents.

Sometimes people get into fight for no apparent reasons, and sometimes people get into fight just for the fun of it. But in Kemar Roach’s case, he seemed to have got into a fight just to humiliate his already losing side. During the third Barbados test against South Africa, the Bowling arsenal of the West Indians had all dried up. And when the premier batsman is hitting you around the park, what do you do. Well just follow what the seniors of the Caribbean have always done – Bowl Bouncers and force the batsman into defense. But Kemar Roach went a step ahead and shared some foul words as well. But as it turned out, none of it worked and the West Indians still faced a humiliating defeat.

7. The Great Australian Trap

Usually it’s quite decipherable when a player is being intimidated by the opponent team. In Australia’s case, more than decipherable it is actually quite visible. But for Roshan Mahanama it was all a lucky accident; lucky at least for the Australians. During an over of Shane Warne, who was rather finding it difficult to contain the Sri Lankan, got Roshan Mahanama in a caught behind appeal. But as the referee thought otherwise the match resumed, but surprisingly Roshan was out the next ball. What happened in the middle was the Wicket keeper had made rather disrespectful remarks about the batsman. This turned him aggressive and cost him his wicket. Way to fall into an open trap Mahanama.

Indians and Pakistanis are not exactly well known for getting along, and especially when it’s a heated final match. During the Asia Cup, Shoaib Akhtar, the then bowling ace of Pakistan, was giving every one of the Indian players a hard time. With his 150 kmph bullets and lethal stares, even the Wall had to succumb. But the brave Harbhajan begged to differ. During the end overs, Harbhajan singh sent one of Akhtar’s balls to the stands. This terribly annoyed him and led him to swear at the calm looking Indian spinner. But Harbhajan didn’t back off, despite his efforts, Akhtar still couldn’t get Harbhajan’s wicket, which only lead to the Spinner leading India to victory. What followed from Harbhajan, can only be regarded as War Cries of a unleashed beast.

If you ever thought the inside out shot was the greatest invention of cricket in modern times, you’re wrong. Because, if the inside-out shot was the world’s first rifle, sledging is the nuke. Though the Australians are renowned for using it, none would have expected it to have come from the bowling ace – Glenn McGrath. During the Windies record 4^th inning chase, Australians desperately needed to derail the lead – Ramnaresh Sarwan. So Glenn resorted to his dirty sledging tactics. Though this was supposed to work, in turn it worked back on McGrath, who was on the verge of ripping Sarwan’s throat. A good lesson learnt by the Aussies.

4. Gambhir Takes on Afridi

Some of the classic cricket fights have emerged from the matches between India and Pakistan. These neighboring countries have been at it since the dawn of time, and it would be hard for someone to pinpoint a match where these two teams haven’t got into a fight. The latest one and the most famous one to emerge was between Gambhir and Afridi. The left handed opener took on the slow-pacer, and sent his deliveries flying to the boundary. So what’s the next step in the book, swear at each other. This turned out to be a swear contest in a mix of Hindi and Urdu. So probably the Umpire had no idea they were even swearing at each other.

3. The Lillee Kick

Any batsman gets frustrated when you’re blocking his path to the crease. And if it’s done deliberately, you can expect some text book swear words being exchanged on the field. But what’s the next step, well according to Dennis Lillee, it was to kick the batsman so he would take it in a lighter way. But unfortunate for him, the person he kicked was the short tempered javed Miandad, who was just a feet short from breaking Lillee’s head if it wasn’t for the umpire. Surely Dennis would never field at the slips again.

2. How to annoy the Sleeping Giant

Inzamam – ul – Haq or more affectionately called Inzi is not exactly the most active fielder on the field. Judging from his size, one can already imagine the amount of practice he puts into the game. So as a reward he takes his silent little naps in the slips during the match. But as it happens even this sleeping giant can turn into a hyper excited hare. During a match in India, one notorious spectator somehow got control of the Public announcement system and started calling out to Inzi. This obviously wouldn’t have woken him up, but he referred to him an Alu or potato in English. This put the sleeping giant in a rage, who set out with the bat to give the spectator a whack; running all over the stadium. So, learn this folks – never mess with people sleeping on the field.

1. Don’t mess with Venkatesh’s Swag

The top famous fight in the cricketing history was between Aamir Sohail and Venkatesh Prasad. What Venkatesh demonstrated to Sohail was that, if someone is going to point directions, Venkatesh was the wrong person to show them to. After hitting myriad of boundaries, Sohail did exactly that, by pointing the direction in which the next ball will disappear. But, rather expectedly, his off-stump was uprooted the next ball, and Venkatesh went on a frenzy, spewing all kinds of swear words at Sohail. So know this people, don’t ever mess with Venkatesh’s swag.
